In 2017 I got the chance to work on the design and packaging of Magneti Marelli's Smart Corner concept vehicle. This was a challenge proposed by Magneti Marelli to contain as many of the sensors and systems to enable SAE Level 3, 4 and 5 autonomous driving with minimal impact to the design of the vehicle. I was their key contact in the FCA design office for all of this concept development and I personally reached out to their team to bring this project into our studio. Our concept was to package ADAS technology into the headlamps and tail lamps of the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. This included next-generation solid-state LiDAR, both short-range and long-range Radar as well as ultrasonic sensors, 360° camera and advanced concept lighting technology. We managed to do this without making any modifications to existing fascias, sheet metal or structure behind the lamps. I worked closely with Magneti's team of engineers to place all of the various sensors into locations according to the visibility requirements from their sensor-fusion team and was left with the challenge of styling around them. The finish product was on display at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas as well as the AutoMobili-D Display at the 2018 North American International Auto Show.
